Government decides not to extend shutdown following May 30; Secretary General urges to repeal the decision

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 27 May 2020 expressing deep concern as the government decided to open all government and non-government organizations from 30 th May amid the covid-19 pandemic situation.

“Coronavirus situation is getting worse across the country. The numbers of patients are increasing parallelly with the increasing number of tests. Under the circumstances, the media is telecasting news quoting the state minister for public administration that, all the government, semi-government and non-government offices will be opened from 31 st May. The state minister further added that, the markets, shops and groceries will be remained functional as it was before. The government and semi-government offices will be operated under its own management. The offices and branches of all commercial and central banks will be opened as well.

We are tensed and worried about the government’s decision. We are of the view that, such decision of the government amidst the ongoing critical condition will cause disastrous impact. The offices and other organizations may be opened after the situation improves. But prior to that, strict enforcement of the lockdown through the armed forces is essential. Otherwise, it would not be wise to resume the offices and other organizations at all. For the sake of the greater public interest, we are urging the government to withdraw their decision.
