Secretary General expresses deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 20 February 2020 expressing deep concern over the existing law and order situation.

“The law and order situation of the country deteriorated severely in recent times. The police forces became engaged with evil acts like extortion and public harassment illegally and unreasonably. As such the citizens are passing days amid extreme insecurity.

Several reports from various dailies quoted that, the law enforcers have detained citizens from different places and sought extortion of huge amounts. Even they threated the detainees of murdering through crossfire if they fail to pay the due amount. Such practice is really regrettable for an independent and sovereign country. Because of the deteriorating law and order situation, stealing, robbery, murder and extortion have increased alarmingly. Policemen are getting involved with political activities instead of resisting crimes as the government has been using them to serve their political purpose.

We are very worried that, several dailies have published report implicating them with ill-crimes which is painful for the entire police administration.

Earlier, several public representatives and citizens had been abducted and they are still remained traceless. According to the constitution, the state has the responsibility to protect lives, properties and fundamental rights of the people. When police, instead of their professional duty became more aggressor, the people have no space to get relief.

We think that initiatives must be taken to engage the police forces with professional responsibilities. We are drawing kind attention of the police high officials in this regard. To recover the lost image of the police force, the allegations which have been brought against them, must be probed and investigated.

I hope that the law enforcing agencies should serve the people upholding the constitutional spirit. We further expect that the concerned authorities should take effective measures in this regard.
