Government excludes Daily Sangram from the media list; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former member of parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 23rd January, 2020 protesting and condemning the decision of excluding Daily Sangram from government’s enlisted media.

The Department of Films and Publications has excluded daily Sangram from the media list of the government. We are vehemently condemning such decision. The constitution of Bangladesh assures press freedom and freedom of expression. Since the beginning of its journey, the Daily Sangram has been publishing authentic and accurate news.

Centering a news of the daily, published on last 12th December, some miscreants have attacked and vandalized the office of Daily Sangram. They also harassed and physically assaulted the editor. Government subsequently arrested its veteran editor Abul Asad. Still he is behind the bar.

We hoped the attackers would be brought to the justice. But it is a matter of great regret, instead of taking action against the attackers, the editor of the Daily Sangram had been kept in the prison in connection with some false cases. To the latest, the authority excluded Daily Sangram from the government’s media list.

This decision is totally unconstitutional and contradicts the constitutionally assured right to freedom of expression. We are severely protesting and condemning the decision and urging the concerned authority to repeal the decision immediately.
