Jamaat Ameer urges to provide relief and assistance to the flood victims

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maqbul Ahmad has issued the following statement on 14th August, 2017 expressing deep concern as the water of almost all the rivers are flowing over the danger level and subsequently there is a warning of severe flood nationwide.

“Water of most of the rivers across the country are flowing over the danger level due to torrential rain and upstream. The flood situation is turning worse as the India has opened the dam and embankment of all the common rivers between Bangladesh and India. Already 21 people have been killed in flood in Dinajpur, Kurigram and Thakurgaon district. Red alert has been issued in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat district. Local peoples became reckless and highly tensed as the houses and crops have been submerged by flood water. Though some farmers have taken shelter in the high places but the peoples are at stake with their cattle. Flood water has snapped the rail links in several northern districts. Water has risen in many academic institutions due to these floods.

The water and met experts are making warning of more disastrous flood than 1988. It is apprehended that this flood may destroy everything. Severe crisis of food, shelter, food and drinking water are being observed in the flood affected area. The local peoples are also suffering from different water prone disease.

Help and assistance, what is given there, are very insufficient in comparison to the demand. The opposition parties and different volunteer organizations cannot distribute reliefs in the area due to stubborn attitudes of the government.

Amidst such disastrous condition, it is the responsibility of all the peoples irrespective of their political identities, to come forward with help and assistance for the flood victims. I am urging the government to increase the flood assistance. Besides, I am asking the Jamaat members and activists to take stand by the side of the victims. I hope that the affluent and rich peoples would come forward to help the helpless peoples in the flood affected zones.
