Central executive committee expresses deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation

A meeting of the central executive committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with party’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in the chair. The meeting expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation.

Central executive committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been observing with deep concern that the law-and-order situation has been deteriorated alarmingly across the country. Public lives and properties are not safe. Under the backing of the administration, the ruling Awami League leaders and activists are committing all types of misdeeds including murder, killing, abduction, kidnapping, extortion, seizing properties, hijacking, briberies and corruption. The countrymen are truly unsecured. It is a painful phenomenon for an independent and sovereign country. The government is using the police forces for political purposes and resultantly they are getting involved with crimes instead of curbing the number of offences.

Crimes are being committed massively as there is absence of good governance and the offenders are being left unpunished. Recently, centering a so-called incident of torching a temple, two Muslim youths have been brutally beaten to death without any probe. The actual offenders were not brought under the book. So, the general masses organized a human chain in protest of the passivity of the administration. Police opened fire against the agitators which left many people injured.

After coming to the power through a farcical election on 7th January, the government has been continuing its repression and arrest drives against the opposition leaders and activists. In last April, 35 Jamaat and Chhatrashibir activists have been arrested from various places including capital Dhaka, Gazipur city, Nilphamari and Rajshahi city. 10 Jamaat men including Rajshahi city Jamaat secretary were arrested while they went to the court to take part in a hearing. Such an incident of arrest from the court premise is unprecedented, inhuman and tantamount to contempt of court.

In addition, reckless teen gang are causing severe deterioration of law-and-order situation. They are becoming involved with various crimes, i.e. murder, rape, smuggling, addiction and etc. The law and order have come to such a deplorable condition because of the patronization of the government and the ruling party.

Under the circumstances, central executive committee urged the concerned authorities to maintain law and order, to secure public lives and properties, to release all the political detainees and to take punitive action against all the offenders of the recently held anarchic incidents including the incident of Modhukhali of the Faridpur district.”
