Central Executive Committee expresses deep concern over the price hike of the essentials

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

A meeting of the central executive committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was held with party’s Acting Ameer and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. The central executive committee expresses deep concern over the price hike of the essentials and undertook the following proposals to bring the prices of the commodities within the capacity of the people.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is observing with deep concern that an unbearable situation has been created for the mass people centering the price hike of the essentials. Since the Awami League government came to the office, price of all necessary items have increased unprecedentedly. Price of rice, lentils, sugar, meat, fishes, salt, greens and vegetables, dairy and poultry products have gone out of common's reach. Price of all utility services including water, gas and electricity also increased multiple times. But citizen's incomes have not increased accordingly. So, the issue of price hike has created severe negative impact upon the public lives.

Prior to the election, this government had promised to provide rice at 10 taka per kilogram and fertilisers at free of cost. But rice is now available at 70/80 taka per kilogram. Prices of fertilisers have increased several times already.

The ongoing situation indicates that the government has no control over the market. This government is not elected and as such they do not have liability towards the people. The incumbent government has been remaining in the office for years by plotting many tricks. But so far, they could not establish a sound market management and monitoring system.

Rather, government sponsored syndicates have caused the price hike just to make unjustified profits. Instead of reducing the mass suffering, the government has made the situation more critical and the prices of all items have gone beyond people’s capacity.

Under the circumstances, central executive committee urges the government to take effective measures for bringing the prices of all essentials at a tolerable level.
