Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman issued a statement on March 28, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam.
In the statement, he said that Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ATM Azharul Islam has been imprisoned for over 13 years due to a fabricated and false case orchestrated by the then fascist government. Following the fall of the fascist regime, many leaders and activists of anti-fascist political parties have been released. The nation had hoped that ATM Azharul Islam, who has been a victim of extreme oppression and persecution during the fascist regime, would also be freed in a new Bangladesh, liberated from autocracy. However, even after nearly eight months of the interim government assuming power, ATM Azharul Islam has not been released, leaving the people of the country shocked and astonished.
We strongly urge the interim government to release Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General, the oppressed leader ATM Azharul Islam, before the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Fitr so that he can celebrate the occasion in a free environment with his family.
