Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 28th May, 2024 expressing deep shock over the casualties of cyclone Remal and also urging the countrymen to come up with humanitarian assistance to the cyclone victims.
At least 16 people were killed so far due to severity of cyclone Remal which affected 19 coastal districts of the country. over 37 lakh (3.7 million) people in 19 coastal districts have been affected by the cyclone. The cyclonic storm Remal which made landfall in Bangladesh’s coastal area on Sunday night has so far damaged 1,50,457 houses. Of the damaged houses, 35,483 were fully damaged in 107 unions and 914 municipalities. Some 22 thousand fishing ponds have been submerged by water in Bagerhat district. Around 30 million people have experienced power cut for more than 36 hours. More than 15 thousand mobile phone towers have become out of function. Hundreds of thousands of people are living under the open sky. Around 200 kilometers of embankments have breached in Satkhira, Patuakhali and Cox’s Bazar. Many crops’ lands have been devastated. Domestic animals including cock, hens, cows and goats have been swept away.
Under the circumstances, it is the obligation of the government to take stand by the side of the disaster victims. Besides, the solvent quarters, political and social organizations and volunteers should come forward to reduce the mass sufferings. Dry items including rice, puffed rice, biscuits, clothes, medicines, kitchen accessories, house repairing items and medical teams must be sent to the disaster-affected districts immediately.
I am praying for the departed souls who have been killed in this cyclone Remal and extending deep shock to their mournful families. I am also praying for the quick recovery of the injury victims.
I am urging the concerned authorities to provide loan without interest to the victim farmers. In addition, I am calling upon the political and social organizations, donor agencies and solvent people, particularly the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami to take a stand by the side of the cyclone victims with humanitarian support and assistance.
