On the morning of October 18 (Saturday), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman visited the residence of the recently deceased local government expert Dr. Tofayel Ahmed in Uttara of the capital. During the visit, he spent some time in the late professor’s library and study room, surrounded by memories of his remarkable life and work.
Dr. Tofayel Ahmed, who led a distinguished career spanning seven decades, had served as the head of the Local Government Reform Commission under the interim government during the final phase of his life. He left behind extensive recommendations for local government reform, which were published in Bengali during his lifetime. Jamaat Ameer went through a copy of those recommendations.
During his visit, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also met with the late scholar’s family members — his wife Masuda Akhtar Chowdhury, only daughter Sadia Ahmed, and granddaughter Sazfa Binte Sarwar — and inquired about their well-being.
At that time, Jamaat Ameer was accompanied by Muktabis-un-Nur, senior journalist, and former president of the Sylhet Press Club, and editor of the leading Sylhet daily Jalalabad, as well as Nayeb-e-Ameer of Sylhet District Jamaat-e-Islami Professor Abdul Hannan.
It may be mentioned that Dr. Tofayel Ahmed, former professor of the Department of Public Administration at the University of Chittagong, passed away on October 8 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. He had been admitted to the hospital the previous day after suffering a severe heart attack.
