Jamaat leaders hold meeting with United Nations Delegation

On December 12th, a meeting was held between a four-member delegation from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and the visiting United Nations delegation at the United Nations residential office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The meeting was conducted in a very cordial and friendly atmosphere.

After the meeting, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher addressed a press briefing. He said that, "Today, we exchanged views with the UN's Resident Representative and the visiting UN delegation. They have come to Bangladesh to discuss the current situation, particularly the ongoing judicial process, the country's development, progress, democracy, and the process of holding a free, fair, and inclusive election in Bangladesh."

He further stated, "During the meeting, they asked about Jamaat-e-Islami’s vision for the future of Bangladesh. On behalf of the party, we presented our stance. Regarding justice, we emphasized that criminals must be prosecuted, but the process should be fair and impartial. We also discussed the need for international standards in the trials at the International Crimes Tribunal. We talked about necessary reforms, the establishment of a democratic system, and the importance of holding a free, fair, and inclusive election in the country at the appropriate time."

The UN delegation was consisted by its head Sebastian Verelst, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' Transitional Justice Advisor, and Marcus Lenz, Deputy Chief of Financing for Peacebuilding, and five other representatives.

Jamaat-e-Islami delegation included Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Central Executive Council member Mr. Saiful Alam Khan Milon, and Central Executive Council member and Jamaat’s Media and publicity Secretary Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda.
