20 sentenced to death in Abrar Fahad murder case upheld

Secretary General calls for swift execution of verdict to ensure justice

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, expressed hope that the swift execution of the verdict upholding the death sentence of 20 individuals in the murder case of BUET student and the symbol of anti-hegemony Shaheed Abrar Fahad would ensure justice.

In a statement issued on March 16, he said that Abrar Fahad, a residential student of Sher-e-Bangla Hall at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was brutally tortured and murdered on the night of October 6, 2019, inside a room ofa leader of Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

Following a case filed by Abrar Fahad’s father, the charge sheet was framed on September 15, 2020. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court sentenced 20 individuals to death and five others to life imprisonment on December 8, 2021. Today, on March 16, the High Court upheld the death sentence of 20 individuals and the life imprisonment of five others.

He further stated that the High Court's verdict in the Abrar Fahad murder case would ensure justice, and they place their trust in this ruling. He also expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the judgment.

He emphasized that if the verdict is executed swiftly, the affected family will receive justice, and similarly it will set a new milestone in the judicial process, Insha’Allah.
