Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 5 May 2024 protesting and condemning the government’s decision to increase railway fare from 20 % to 30% as per the distance.
The recent decision of the government is illogical, unjustified and it will go against the public interest. Railway is one of the main transportation route for the people of this area. At present, the railway management collapsed totally due to unprecedented corruption and mismanagement. Although the government is talking about communication sector’s development but practically such developments are unseen in the railway sector. Corruption, financial irregularities and looting have made the railway a loss sector. However, if the government can curb the mismanagement, the sector may flourish. The government is not inclined to do so. Instead of curbing corruption, the government has increased train fare from 20 to 30 percent, which would cause more suffering for the train commuters. As the government is not an elected regime, so naturally their all decisions actually go against the interest of the people. The latest decision of increasing railway fare is another example of such claim.
We are protesting and condemning such unjustified decision of the government and urging the concerned authorities to withdraw the decision of increasing railway fare immediately.
