Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 19th December, 2023 expressing deep concern as 13 Jamaat leaders and activists of Natore district have been convicted with lifetime imprisonment in a false and politically-motivated cases.

“Death penalty was declared against Allama Delwar Hossain Sayedee in the International Crimes Tribunal in 2013. Islam-loving people across the country came to the street protesting against such verdict. People of Lalpur Upazila under Natore district had also organized a demonstration against the verdict. Afterwards, the authority filed a case against Jamaat leaders and activists including Lalpur Upazila Jamaat’s working committee member and Natore district Chhatrashibir’s former President Mohsin Alam and his father and Lalpur Upazila Jamaat’s Shura member, former member Mokhlesur Rahman, Kodomchilan Union Jamaat Ameer Abdur Razzaq, Nayeb-e-Ameer Mizanur Rahman and other Jamaat activists.

The government has tried to attain its political interest from this case and produced the fabricated witnesses accordingly. Today, on 19th December, Rajshahi speedy tribunal declared life time imprisonment against 13 Jamaat leaders and activists. Jamaat leaders and activists have become deprived from justice in this case. We will file an appeal against this verdict. If the appeal court upholds justice, all of them will get acquittal insha Allah.

He further said, the incumbent government is convicting the opposition men in a speedy way in order to eliminate the opponents. The statement of a minister exposed that, the opposition leaders and activists are being kept detained as per their instructions and as per their approval some of the detainees are released. Such remark of the minister substantiates that the lower courts are implementing the directives of the government. I am urging the concerned authorities to stop executive interference at once and also to withdraw all political cases which are being filed against the opposition men including this case, in which 13 leaders and activists of Natore district Jamaat have been awarded with life time imprisonment.
