Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman issued a statement on 14th December expressing profound sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of six Bangladeshi peacekeeping personnel of the Bangladesh Army in a terrorist attack on a United Nations base located in the Abyei area of Sudan, and extending condolences to the bereaved family members.

In the statement, the Ameer of Jamaat said, “Bangladesh Army peacekeepers in the Abyei area of Sudan in Africa have fallen victim to a terrorist attack. In this attack, six members of the Bangladesh Army attained martyrdom, and eight others were seriously injured. The incident occurred on Saturday, 13 December, in the afternoon according to local time in Sudan.”

He further said, “An attack on members of the Bangladesh Army who are engaged in establishing world peace is a heinous crime against humanity. I strongly condemn this barbaric attack. At the same time, I express my deep sorrow and grief over this loss of life and extend heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs and to the injured. As a brave nation, we are proud of their sacrifice in the cause of establishing world peace.”

He said, “Under the supervision of the United Nations, the Bangladesh Army has been performing risky duties with dedication and bravery in establishing peace in various war-torn and conflict-prone regions of the world. So far, the courageous Bangladeshi peacekeepers have carried out their responsibilities with professionalism and efficiency in complex and challenging situations in countries such as Cambodia, the former Yugoslavia, East Timor of Indonesia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, and others, and have been able to make outstanding contributions to establishing peace in those countries. These achievements and successes of the Bangladesh Army have earned widespread praise from the global community. He added, “We firmly believe that the Bangladesh Army will continue in the future to make invaluable contributions to establishing world peace, alongside safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.”

He further said, “I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the deceased. I earnestly pray to the Almighty Allah to accept them as martyrs and to grant speedy recovery to the injured. I call upon the Government of Bangladesh and the United Nations to ensure advanced medical treatment for the injured. At the same time, I make an earnest appeal to the United Nations and the global community to further strengthen the security of those engaged in world peace missions.”
