WASA to raise water price by 10 percent from 1st July; Secretary General protests

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 30th May, 2024 protesting and condemning the latest illogical decision of the government of raising water price by 10 percent from next 1st July.

“The decision of raising water price which is being supplied to the houses, offices by 10 percent are unlawful, illogical and certainly it will go against the public interest. I am urging the concerned authorities to repeal the decision immediately.

Dhaka WASA has set the new water price at Tk 16.70 per 1,000 litres for residential users and Tk 46.20 per 1,000 litres for commercial connections. Currently, residential users pay Tk 15.18 per 1,000 litres while commercial users pay Tk 42 for a similar amount of water. The decision will also be effective for unmetered holdings, deep tube wells, under-construction buildings, and all types of water and sewage charges, including minimum bills. Such decision of the government is a huge blow against the oppressed people.

The government is causing sufferings to the people by increasing the prices of all essential items including rice, lentils, wheat, oil, sugar etc. Under such situation, WASA increased the water prices and intensified the mass sufferings. It should be added that since this government came into the office in 2009, so fat they have raised the water price in 16 occasions.

Through corruption and looting, the government has destroyed the national economy. Now they cannot run the country properly. So, for the sake of their interest, they have increased water prices to linger their misrule.
For the sake of public interest, I am urging the concerned authorities to withdraw this unjust and illogical decision of raising water prices by 10 percent immediately.”
